CFD Research Corporation (CFDRC) is developing advanced CFD spray/atomization
models for the purposes of simulating spray combustion processes in furnaces,
boilers and gas turbines. Ongoing development includes:
- Lagrangian spray in 3D unstructured parallel grids
- Incorporation of models for primary atomization, secondary atomization,
collision/coalescence, deformation, turbulent dispersion, etc.
- Incorporation of multi-component droplet and dense spray models into
the simulation framework
- Incorporation of supercritical and superheated vaporization models
- Incorporation of advanced spray-wall interaction models
- Development of specific atomization models for pressure swirl, airblast,
and jet-in-crossflow
- Validation of spray modules against NIST data and other datasets
Multiple projects are focusing on liquid jet-in-gas crossflow atomization
modeling. A novel Boundary Layer Stripping (BLS) model has been developed
and validated. In addition, a new Eulerian Jet (EJ) model is being implemented
in which the liquid core blocks off the gas stream, resulting in improved
near-wall spray/atomization predictions. And finally, liquid pulsation,
and models to simulate its effect on penetration/atomization, are being
developed and validated.
