CFDRC developed a novel and improved double-lumen hemodialysis catheter (US patent No. US 6,409,700 B1, see Figure 1). CFDRC’s novel catheter features minimal access recirculation and allows for maximal flow rates, thereby shortening treatment time by ~40% and reducing patient discomfort. The successful development of this catheter, within a short period of time, is attributed to “virtual-prototyping” approach. Simulations (Figure 2a) showed that the modified CFDRC design reduces access recirculation and raised pressure in the vicinity of the inlet aperture which was later confirmed via experiments (Figure 2b). Critical design concepts were conceived and optimized in a short period of time using simulations or numerical experiments.
