Ions Control Shape Of Nanofibers Grown On Clear Substrate

The first successful synthesis of straight, aligned carbon nanofibers on a transparent substrate was demonstrated by joint efforts of CFD Research Corporation, North Carolina State University and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. CFDRC provided valuable insight to understand the plasma phenomena enabling this unique approach and guided the development of the synthesis process through physics based modeling of the process and reactor technology. The project culminated in a new way to synthesize aligned carbon nanofibers on a transparent substrate. Growing such nanofiber coatings is important for use in novel biomedical research tools, solar cells, water repellent coatings and other applications.
