CFD-FASTRAN employs a six-degree of freedom (6-DOF)
module for solving generalized rigid body motion. The 6-DOF module is coupled
with the Navier-Stokes flow solver to provide aerodynamic analysis for bodies
in relative motion. The salient features of the 6-DOF module include:
- Rigid body motion formulation is based on theory of Etkins
- Fully integrated with the flow solver
Allows user to specify generalized point force routines for time or
distance forces, using 5th order polynomials or files with profile data
- Allows user to specify full constraints and model dependencies
- Allows user to specify model sequencing
- Generalized thrust integration routines for multiple zones and surface
patches
The figures on the right show a 6-DOF Module application example. In
this application the 6-DOF module was used to calculate the rigid body
motion of the store. The Automated Chimera Module
was used to handle the associated grid movement. Trajectory predictions
show excellent comparisons to test data.
