CFDRC and Harvard University Develop Multiple Organ-on-Chip Systems to Mimic the Whole Human Body

Huntsville, AL -- CFD Research Corporation (CFDRC) is a part of a team lead by the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University that has been awarded a Cooperative Agreement worth up to $37 million with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop 10 human organs-on-chips (lung, heart, liver, gut, etc.) to study complex human physiology outside the body for drug discovery. CFDRC will focus on model based design of individual organs, and on mathematical modeling of the in vitro and in vivo human physiology and pharmacology. The "human-on-a-chip" devices and models will be used to shorten the drug discovery cycle, and providing critical information on drug safety and efficacy. Dr. Andrzej Przekwas, CTO of CFDRC, is the Co-PI on this project.
